The first few months of motherhood can be extremely stressful to your body. Not only are you healing from nine months of carrying your baby, but your body is changing and adapting to the needs of motherhood. One of the biggest changes that happen to your body in the first few months of motherhood is the regulation of hormones through your endocrine system. Increased estrogen production helps prepare your body for motherhood by helping you produce breastmilk. This new estrogen output can have many side effects on your body including new acne and most commonly of all, hair loss. Post-partum hair loss is common and fairly difficult to fully avoid, but here are some tips to help you combat any level of unwanted hair loss.
Eat a Well-Balanced Vitamin Rich Diet
One of the biggest factors in the health of your hair is your diet. Maintaining a healthy diet that is filled with natural vitamins and nutrients can keep your hair healthy despite your hormones. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, clean proteins, and healthy fats is a great way to make sure your hair gets everything it needs to stay healthy and beautiful. It is also important that you eat regularly and try not to miss too many meals because your hair will need consistent nutrients throughout the day.
We all know how valuable water is to our bodies. Drinking water regularly is one of the best ways to maintain healthy hair. A couple of glasses of water a day can keep your hair hydrated and looking beautiful. It could also decrease the chance that your hair falls out. By increasing your overall scalp and her health, you can decrease the likelihood do you experience aggressive hair loss.
Wear it Down
Changing the way that you wear your hair can reduce the stress put on your scalp. With less pressure on your scalp, you keep your hair from falling out or being pulled out when it is loosely held in place. If you suspect you’re starting to lose your hair after the baby, you should avoid hairstyles that put a lot of pressure on your scalp. These can include tight ponytails, braids, and bonds are pulled tightly. You should also try to avoid wearing hats or hair accessories that could pull on your head and cause your hair to fall out faster.
Reduce Stressful Situations
Even without the added pressure of your postpartum hormones, stress is enough to make your hair fall out. Stressful situations have been proven to cause increased hair loss. When you are already at high risk for hair loss, it is important to make sure that you avoid any stressful situation. Figure out something you could do every day that is calming that can reduce your overall stress levels. Make sure that you establish routines with your child so that nothing unexpected causes unnecessary stress. Stress is unavoidable as a new mother, but being mindful of your hair situation and taking the necessary precautions can help drastically reduce hair loss.
Wean your Baby Slowly
Postpartum hair loss is most common in women directly after they wean their child from the breast. As your body stops producing milk, the lowered estrogen levels can cause your hair to fall out. Your hair was previously dependent on your increased hormone output and is now slowly readjusting. Studies have found that women who abruptly stop breastfeeding are more likely to suffer serious hair loss. Weaning your baby from the breast slowly can help your body get better control of hormone regulation. Studies show that weaning your baby from your breast over a couple of weeks can drastically reduce your risk of extreme hair loss. Reduce the frequency of feeds and pumps by a couple each week until you are fully finished producing milk. This will allow your body to return to a normal state hopefully keeping your hair intact.
